Chapter Ten

Fallina sat across from her mother right after the meeting, anger still simmering in her gut. How could she have acted so irresponsibly? Did she care for her so little?

She may as well tell her she was a lesbian.

“I’ve gone over the proposal for Silken Kiss,” Tara told her, breaking into her thoughts.

Fallina’s fingers locked together tightly on her lap. “Oh?”

“I’ve decided to allow you to go ahead with it,” Tara told her evenly. “I’m curious as to how far you can actually take it.”

Her eyes widened and a startled breath escaped her. “Are you serious?” she exclaimed. “I can’t believe it.”

“I want you to work closely with Kensal on the campaign, but I’m going to allow you to focus on this area of the business. Kensal and I will discuss the budget.”

“Mom, thank you so much.” She squealed and tapped her feet on the floor, fists clenched in joy. “You won’t regret this. I promise.”

“You have a year to make it work, Fallina.”

“I won’t let you down,” she said softly and saw something in her mother’s eyes that made her frown. She’d let her down too many times already.

She was about to speak when a knock sounded on the office door.

“Fallina, I’ll talk to you later,” Tara said and then called, “Come in.”

Fallina got to her feet as the door opened. “Okay.” She turned to see a six-foot-four inch tall man with dirty-blond hair striding in. His leather briefcase was held at his side as he came toward them. He gave her a nod, and she gave him a brief smile before exiting.

Fallina headed down the hall to her office, shoulders slumped. Why couldn’t they talk to each other anymore?

“How are things going with the hot alpha chick that picked you up the other night?” Patty asked when Fallina was steps from her desk.

“What?” Her brows drew together.

“At Mist. Tasha said after I left, you got busy.” She worked her neck, giving Fallina a grin. “So?”

“Nothing,” she said, her lips tugging into a smile. Nothing that was her business right now. She had to keep this quiet until she found the nerve to talk to her mother. “Oh, I better go. I have a meeting with Kensal.”

“Why did your mom do that? Make Blake CEO and President?” she asked in a hushed tone. “I thought she’d put you in charge. You are her daughter.”

She shrugged. “She’s putting me in charge of the Silken Kiss project.”

“Are you serious? Is she really going to allow you to do this? Oh my God!” Patty got to her feet and hugged her. “It’s going to be so awesome.”

“Yeah.”

“Be careful. Kensal sounded a little chilly.” She made a face. “She called a minute ago. I guess she’s pissed off she’s not in charge.”

“Hmm. We’ll see.” People thought Kensal was cold and tough. She’d seen a side of her that made her heart skip a beat and her body blaze like a bonfire.

“Right. See you later. Hey. If there’s nothing going on with you and that hot chick, do you want to go out tonight? Joan’s giving a party at her place.
